Along with many other people, our Home was waiting in great anticipation for the election of our new Pontiff as the Cardinals of the church gathered in conclave. At about 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13th we got word that white smoke had appeared through the chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel and that a pope had been elected.
Resident Steve Gray (seen in the photo here) immediately went into celebration mode and began the traditional bell ringing to announce the joyful news. Later, as Pope Francis presented himself to the world, his picture, the papal coat of arms, a large votive candle, and a statue of St. Peter were displayed in our lobby and in the chapel. Both were reminders to all of us to pray in thanksgiving for his election, and to pray for the newly elected Pope who has accepted this great responsibility for the Church. Viva la papa!
